Her name meant 'guardian' — and the monster who turned men to stone now guards Versace handbags and names the creature with the most venomous tentacles in the sea.

Μέδουσα (Médousa) is the feminine present participle of μέδω (médō, 'to protect, to rule over'), making her name 'the guardian' or 'the protectress.' This etymology is bitterly ironic. In the earliest versions of the myth, Medusa was mortal and beautiful. Poseidon assaulted her in Athena's temple. Athena punished not the god but the victim, transforming Medusa's hair into serpents and her gaze into a weapon that turned living beings to stone. Her name, 'protectress,' became the cruelest possible joke: she could protect nothing, least of all herself.

Perseus killed her with a mirror-polished shield, looking at her reflection to avoid her gaze. He cut off her head and carried it as a weapon. From her severed neck sprang Pegasus (the winged horse) and Chrysaor (a golden giant) — both children of Poseidon, born in the moment of their mother's death. Athena mounted Medusa's head on her aegis, the divine shield. The guardian's face became the war goddess's armor. Greek temples placed Gorgon heads (gorgoneia) on their pediments as apotropaic devices — images of terror meant to ward off evil. Medusa was protecting buildings in death as her name had always promised.

The jellyfish genus Medusa was named by Linnaeus in 1752. The connection is visual: the bell of a jellyfish trails tentacles like snakes hanging from a head. The box jellyfish Chironex fleckeri, one of the most venomous animals on earth, belongs to the broader Medusozoa subphylum. In marine biology, the free-swimming form of a cnidarian is still called the 'medusa stage,' as opposed to the stationary 'polyp stage.' Her name became a scientific term for anything that drifts through water trailing lethal filaments.

Gianni Versace chose Medusa's head as his fashion house logo in 1978, explaining that she represented the power of attraction — if you look at her, you cannot look away. Caravaggio painted her severed head on a shield around 1597, and the painting now hangs in the Uffizi. Freud interpreted her as a symbol of castration anxiety in a 1922 essay. Hélène Cixous reclaimed her in 'The Laugh of the Medusa' (1975), arguing that patriarchal culture turns powerful women into monsters. The name means guardian, and every generation finds a different thing she guards.

The feminist reclamation of Medusa — from monster to symbol of punished female power — is one of the great reversals in modern mythology.
