The oldest guided meditation in the Buddhist canon is not about emptiness or mindfulness — it is about love.

Mettā derives from the Pali word mitta, meaning 'friend,' which traces back to the Sanskrit mitra (friend, ally), itself from the Proto-Indo-European root *mey- (to exchange). The Karaniya Metta Sutta, preserved in the Khuddakapatha and Sutta Nipata of the Pali Canon, is attributed to the Buddha himself and dates to approximately the 5th century BCE. In it, the Buddha instructs his monks to cultivate a specific quality of mind: universal, unconditional goodwill toward all living beings, without exception and without limit.

Mettā is the first of four brahmaviharas — 'divine abidings' or 'sublime attitudes' — alongside karuṇā (compassion), muditā (sympathetic joy), and upekkhā (equanimity). The practice is structured: the meditator begins by directing goodwill toward themselves, then to a loved one, then to a neutral person, then to a difficult person, and finally to all sentient beings without distinction. This deliberate expansion from the personal to the universal was a radical psychological technology in the 5th century BCE and remains one today.

The tradition records that the Buddha taught the Metta Sutta to a group of monks who had gone into the forest to meditate and were terrified by hostile spirits. His prescription was not an exorcism or a protective spell but an attitude adjustment: radiate goodwill so completely that even hostile beings cannot find a foothold for aggression. The story, whether historical or pedagogical, captures the pragmatic genius of mettā — it treats love not as a sentiment but as a strategy, not as vulnerability but as power.

Mettā practice traveled wherever Buddhism went: to Sri Lanka with Mahinda in the 3rd century BCE, through Southeast Asia with Theravāda missionaries, to Tibet and East Asia in Mahāyāna forms that paralleled and often enriched the Pali original. In the 20th century, Burmese teachers like Mahāsi Sayādaw and S. N. Goenka brought mettā practice to Western audiences, where it was adopted by clinical psychology. Loving-kindness meditation — the English translation of mettā bhāvanā — is now among the most researched contemplative practices in neuroscience.
