Modulation is the technique of encoding information onto a carrier signal—varying its amplitude, frequency, or phase to carry data. The concept predates electronics: church bells modulate air pressure to carry meaning across a village; a telegraph key modulates electrical current to carry Morse code. The mathematics of modulation were formalized in the early 20th century by engineers working on radio and telephony.
The modern modem's direct ancestor was the SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) air defense system, developed in the early 1950s by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and IBM for the US Air Force. SAGE needed to transmit radar data from remote stations to central computers over ordinary telephone lines—lines designed for voice, not data. The solution was a device that modulated digital signals into audio tones for transmission, and demodulated them back into digital signals at the other end. IBM engineers called it a 'data phone.' The portmanteau 'modem' followed naturally: modulator plus demodulator.
Commercial modems appeared in 1958, initially for the SAGE network. Bell Laboratories' Bell 103 modem (1962) made the technology available to businesses. Universities connected through modems on ARPANET beginning in 1969—the direct ancestor of the internet. Through the 1980s and 1990s, modems became household objects: the iconic screech of 56k dial-up (a handshake protocol called 'training') became the sound of the internet for a generation.
Today, modems are invisible. The device your internet service provider installs—often called a modem/router combo—still modulates and demodulates signals, now over cable, fiber, or DSL rather than analog telephone lines. The principles are unchanged since the SAGE radar stations of the 1950s: encode, transmit, decode. The Cold War air defense network and your home broadband share the same fundamental architecture.
