Mvskoke

Mvskoke is the autonym — the self-designation — of the Creek Confederacy, a powerful alliance of towns in present-day Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. The etymology of Mvskoke is uncertain even within the language; it may relate to a term for the landscape, or it may be an ancient ethnonym whose original meaning has been lost. English colonists called them Creek because of the many streams and rivers throughout their territory — a name imposed from outside.

The Creek Confederacy was one of the most sophisticated political organizations in pre-contact North America, comprising dozens of semi-autonomous towns (talwa) that maintained alliance through shared ceremonial practices, trade networks, and a system of red towns (war) and white towns (peace). At its height the Confederacy held much of the Southeast.

The Trail of Tears of 1830-1838 forcibly relocated the Creek — and Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole nations — from their southeastern homelands to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. Approximately 3,500 of the roughly 15,000 Creeks who were relocated died during the removal. The city of Muskogee, founded in 1872 in what was Creek territory, became a significant settlement.

Merle Haggard's 1969 country song 'Okie from Muskogee' used the city's name to signal plain-spoken American identity — a usage entirely divorced from the city's history as a center of Creek Nation governance. Mvskoke remains the nation's name for themselves. They still hold their National Council and their ceremonial grounds in Oklahoma.
