The name Nicholas is a transparent compound in Greek: Nikolaos joins nikē, the word for victory, with laos, meaning people. The same nikē gave its name to the winged goddess carved at Samothrace around 190 BCE and to the athletic shoe company twenty-two centuries later. Building names from abstract nouns was standard Greek practice, and Nikolaos appears in Athenian records from at least the 4th century BCE. The compound carried a specific social meaning: not just personal victory, but victory achieved on behalf of the community.
The name's modern reach owes almost everything to Nicholas of Myra, a bishop in the city now called Demre on Turkey's southern coast, who died around 343 CE. His reputation for anonymous charity was established within a generation of his death. The most repeated story has him throwing bags of gold through the window of a poor man's house at night, providing dowries for three daughters who would otherwise have been sold into servitude. Washington Irving's satirical 1809 history of New York popularized Sinterklaas as Sancte Claus, and Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' fixed the modern Santa Claus: the sleigh, the reindeer, the chimney descent. A 4th-century bishop from coastal Anatolia became, through Latin, French, Dutch, and American reinvention, the central gift-giving figure of the English-speaking December. The Greek laos, the people, got their victory after all.
