French ogre first appears in Charles Perrault's Contes de ma Mère l'Oye (Tales of My Mother Goose, 1697), in the story 'Le Petit Poucet' (Hop-o'-My-Thumb). Whether Perrault invented the word or recorded an existing folk term is debated. The most popular etymology traces ogre to Latin Orcus, the Roman god of the underworld and punisher of oath-breakers. Others suggest Italian orco (a man-eating monster in Italian romance literature), which itself may come from Orcus. Tolkien's Orcs may be etymologically related — he acknowledged the connection to Orcus.
The ogre in fairy tales is large, ugly, stupid, and hungry for human flesh. The ogre's wife is often sympathetic — she hides the hero's children and lies to her husband. The ogre's rehabilitation is complete — more complete than the werewolf's, the vampire's, or the dragon's.
The word ogre is used figuratively for any intimidating authority figure: a boss, a teacher, a bureaucrat. 'The tax ogre' or 'the ogre of the exam hall' uses the word for someone who is frightening but ultimately beatable. The fairy-tale logic persists in the metaphor: the ogre is large and threatening, but the clever protagonist wins.
