ஊர்

Ūr is the Tamil word for a village, a town, a settled place. It is among the most ancient and most productive place-name elements in any Indian language. Bangalore (Bengalūru), Thanjavur (Tañcāvūr), Tiruchirappalli (Tiruccirāppaḷḷi, from a compound that includes ūr-related elements) — the suffix appears across South India in every Dravidian language. In Kannada, it is ūru. In Telugu, ūru. In Malayalam, ūr. The word is Proto-Dravidian.

The Sangam literature uses ūr as the fundamental unit of social organization. An ūr had a headman, a council, common lands, a tank for irrigation, and a temple. It was not just a place but a political entity. The phrase ūr sabhā (village assembly) appears in Chola inscriptions as a functioning democratic body — villagers gathered to make decisions about land, water, and taxes. The Uttaramerur inscriptions from the 10th century describe election procedures for the ūr assembly that were more detailed than most medieval European governance systems.

The word also carries emotional weight. In Tamil, 'en ūr' (my town, my village) is a statement of identity. Tamil cinema and literature use ūr as shorthand for home, belonging, roots. To ask 'uṅkaḷ ūr eṅkē?' (where is your town?) is to ask where someone is from — not where they live now, but where they belong. The word holds a person's origin.

Modern Tamil city names carry ūr as a living fossil. Coimbatore is Kōyamputtūr. Madurai was Maturai, and while it does not end in ūr, hundreds of its neighborhoods do. The word is the bedrock layer of South Indian geography, older than any dynasty that built on it.
