Pan's pipe takes its name from Pan, the Greek god of shepherds, wilds, and rustic music, who was associated with the instrument. The Greek myth, recorded by Ovid in the Metamorphoses (~8 CE), tells that Pan pursued the nymph Syrinx. She fled to a river and prayed to be transformed. The river gods turned her into marsh reeds. Pan, hearing the wind whistle through the reeds, cut them to different lengths and bound them together, creating the first syrinx — the Greek name for the instrument. The English 'panpipe' combines the god's name with the instrument.
The instrument itself is far older and more widespread than the Greek myth. Panpipes have been found in archaeological sites across South America, China, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands, many predating contact with Greek culture. The Andean siku (also called zampoña) is a central instrument in Aymara and Quechua music, played in paired sets where two musicians alternate notes. The Chinese paixiao dates to at least the Zhou dynasty (~1000 BCE). The instrument was invented independently in multiple civilizations.
What makes panpipes unusual among world instruments is the paired-playing tradition. In the Andes, siku are played by two people — the ira (the leader) has one set of notes and the arka (the follower) has the alternating notes. Neither player can produce a complete melody alone. The music requires cooperation. This interlocking pattern, called hocketing in Western musical terminology, makes the Andean panpipe a social instrument in a way that most instruments are not.
Modern panpipes are associated with two very different contexts: Andean folk music and the breathy, reverb-heavy recordings sold at new-age shops and played in spa waiting rooms. The Romanian pan flute tradition, preserved by virtuosos like Gheorghe Zamfir, occupies a middle ground. Zamfir's recordings of 'The Lonely Shepherd' sold millions in the 1970s and 1980s. The god of the wilds would not recognize the spa music, but he might recognize the loneliness.

Today
Panpipes are sold in music shops, airport markets, and Andean street-performer stalls worldwide. The sound is instantly recognizable — breathy, hollow, slightly mournful. It has become a signifier of two things that have nothing to do with each other: indigenous Andean culture and new-age relaxation.
Pan lost the nymph and made music from what was left. The myth is a story about turning loss into art, which is a story humans tell in every culture. The instrument is older than the myth. The loneliness is older than both.
