The paragraph mark — that backwards P with a double stem — has one of the strangest names in typography, and its shape is the fossil of a medieval reading practice that vanished centuries ago.

The pilcrow (¶) derives its name from a mangled chain of Old French: paragraphe → pelagraphe → pylcrafte → pilcrow. The word 'paragraph' itself comes from Greek para (beside) + graphein (to write). Medieval scribes wrote a mark beside the text to signal a new section of argument; the mark sat in the margin, not in the flow of words. The form evolved from the letter C (for capitulum, 'chapter' or 'section') with a vertical stroke added, then two strokes, until it became the reversed P we recognize today.

In early manuscripts, texts ran continuously — no blank lines, no indentation, minimal visual hierarchy. The pilcrow was the reader's guide, inserted (sometimes in red ink by a rubricator, sometimes left as a blank space the rubricator never filled) to mark where the logic of the text shifted. Finding a pilcrow in a medieval manuscript is finding a 12th-century scribe's editorial judgment: here a new thought begins. The mark is a form of annotation as old as continuous prose.

With the advent of print, Gutenberg and his successors initially left spaces in the text for rubricators to add pilcrows by hand — the same practice as in manuscripts. This was soon abandoned; it was too slow and too expensive. Printers began using indentation and later blank lines to signal paragraph breaks, and the pilcrow was demoted to a specialized mark used in legal and liturgical texts. It never fully disappeared: it became the proofreader's mark for 'begin new paragraph here,' and it survived into the era of word processing.

Today the pilcrow appears on every keyboard through software menus, and every word processor uses it as the 'show formatting' symbol — press the button, and every paragraph break, tab, and space becomes visible as a pilcrow or dot. Designers use it to make the invisible architecture of text briefly legible. The mark has come full circle: it began as a guide for readers navigating unmarked prose, and now it shows writers the hidden structure of their own documents.
