Earth spins like a wobbling top — and the slow drift of that wobble, across 26,000 years, means the North Star will not always be the North Star, and the zodiacal signs have slipped an entire constellation out of alignment with their founding stars.

Praecessio derives from praecedere: prae ('before') + cedere ('to go') — 'to go before, to precede.' Medieval Latin astronomers coined praecessio aequinoctiorum — the 'precession of the equinoxes' — to describe the phenomenon that Hipparchus had identified in approximately 127 BCE by comparing his own star-position measurements with those recorded by earlier Babylonian and Greek observers. The vernal equinox — the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading northward — was slowly shifting westward relative to the background stars. Where the equinox had once fallen in the constellation Aries, it had moved into Pisces by Hipparchus's time. The celestial coordinate system was drifting.

The physical cause — not known to ancient observers — is the gravitational torque exerted by the Sun and Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge. Earth is not a perfect sphere; it bulges slightly at the equator due to its rotation. The Moon and Sun pull slightly harder on the near side of this bulge than on the far side, creating a torque that causes Earth's rotation axis to trace a slow cone in space, exactly as a spinning top wobbles when tilted. The axis completes one full precession cycle in approximately 25,772 years — the so-called Great Year. During this time, the celestial pole traces a circle through the northern sky. Currently, the North Celestial Pole points close to Polaris. In 12,000 years, it will point toward Vega; in 26,000 years, it will be near Polaris again.

The consequences of precession are distributed across history in ways that most people never notice because the timescales exceed recorded civilization. The Great Pyramid of Giza was oriented toward the northern pole star of its era — Thuban in the constellation Draco — which was close to the North Celestial Pole around 2700 BCE. The shaft in the King's Chamber that points northward was aimed at Thuban. Polaris had not yet become the North Star. The Egyptian builders were working with a sky that no longer exists in quite the same configuration. Similarly, the astrological zodiac was fixed to the seasonal year by Greek astronomers around 150 BCE, when the vernal equinox was in the constellation Aries. Two thousand years of precession have moved the equinox into Pisces, so 'your sign is Aries' means the Sun was in the constellation Pisces on your birthday.

In modern astronomy and geodesy, precession is not merely a historical curiosity but a precision-correction factor. Star catalogs must specify their epoch — the date to which the stellar coordinates refer — because the positions shift measurably over years due to precession. Radio telescope arrays, spacecraft trajectory calculations, and geodetic positioning systems all require precession corrections. The International Astronomical Union maintains the standard precession model, currently the IAU 2006 precession model, which accounts for the combined effects of luni-solar precession and the slower planetary precession (caused by other planets' gravitational influences on Earth's orbit). Hipparchus spotted the drift with naked-eye star measurements; contemporary models compute it to milliseconds of arc per year.
