Precipitation is the act of falling headlong — Latin praecipitatio meant a headlong rush, a throwing down from a height, and rain and snow are precipitation because they fall from the sky.

Latin praecipitare combined prae (before, in front) with caput (head). Praeceps meant headfirst, headlong — something moving or falling with the head foremost. Praecipitatio was the act of rushing headlong, of throwing down, of falling precipitously. The word described actions that were hasty, rushed, tumbling: the headlong fall of water over a cliff, or the reckless speed of someone acting without pause for thought.

The meteorological meaning developed as natural philosophers analyzed weather. Water vapor rising into the atmosphere becomes rain, snow, hail, or sleet when conditions cause it to condense and fall. The falling from sky to earth was the precipitate action — the headlong return of moisture from altitude. By the 17th century English natural philosophy used precipitation for any water falling from clouds.

Chemistry adopted the same word for a different precipitation: when a substance dissolved in a solution is caused to form solid particles that fall to the bottom of the container, those particles are a precipitate. The reaction precipitates a substance — causes it to fall out of solution. Chemical precipitation and meteorological precipitation share the Latin fall.

Precipitate as an adjective preserved the original reckless, hasty meaning: a precipitate decision is one made headlong, without due consideration. Precipitation as haste is still standard in formal writing. Rain and recklessness share the same Latin root, united by the image of something falling too fast.

Climate change is altering precipitation patterns worldwide — making wet regions wetter and dry regions drier, shifting seasonal timing, intensifying extreme rainfall events.

The Latin headlong fall turns out to be the right image for the problem. Precipitation is not gradual; it comes in events — storms, monsoons, droughts and deluges. The reckless speed that praecipitare described is exactly what extreme precipitation delivers: too much water, too fast, in the wrong places.
