पूजा

Puja (पूजा) is Sanskrit, meaning worship, veneration, honor. The word derives from Sanskrit pūjā, related to concepts of reverence and respect. A puja can be elaborate—a full temple ceremony with priests, offerings, hymns, and hundreds of participants—or simple: flowers and incense before a home altar. Any act of devotion is puja.

The practice predates written Hinduism. Archaeological evidence suggests puja-like rituals in the Indus Valley civilization (~2500 BCE). As Hinduism developed across centuries, puja became the central spiritual practice: an offering made to deities (gods, goddesses, saints) with the intent to invoke their blessings, seek guidance, or express gratitude.

A basic puja follows a structure: purification, invocation, offerings (flowers, incense, food, water), chanting, and conclusion. But variations are infinite. North Indian pujas differ from South Indian pujas. Temple pujas differ from home pujas. Each region, each family, each deity has its own puja practice. Diversity within unity.

Over a billion Hindus perform puja in some form every day—morning puja in homes before dawn, puja at temples, puja at crossroads and river banks. The word puja means both the ritual act and the inner attitude: an opening of yourself to something larger, an offering of attention and intention. Puja is how a billion people begin their day.
