Stirrup descends from Old English stigrāp, a compound of stīgan (to climb, to mount) and rāp (rope). In its earliest form the stirrup was literally a mounting rope — a loop of leather or cord hanging from the saddle to help a rider swing up onto a horse. The word preserves that original act of ascension in its very syllables.

Historians of technology treat the stirrup as a hinge point in medieval history. Before it arrived in Europe from Central Asia around the seventh century CE, riders gripped with their thighs alone. With stirrups bracing their feet, knights could absorb the shock of lance impact without being thrown. Some scholars argue this single innovation made heavy armored cavalry — and thus feudalism itself — possible, though that thesis remains contested.

The stirrup spread westward along trade and conquest routes: nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppe developed iron stirrups, and they reached Tang Dynasty China, then Sassanid Persia, then Byzantine and Frankish Europe. Each culture adapted the shape — round, D-shaped, hourglass — to suit its riding style and metallurgical tradition.

In the modern ear, stirrup is almost entirely equestrian, but anatomists borrowed it for one of the three tiny ossicles of the middle ear. The stirrup bone — the stapes — is the smallest bone in the human body, shaped exactly like its namesake. To know the word fully is to see both the sweeping steppe and the innermost chamber of sound.
