Before it named a hand drum, 'tambourine' named a Persian long-necked lute — and the round shape of that instrument's body became a metaphor for roundness in European languages, attaching the instrument's name to a completely different object across the Mediterranean.

The word 'tambourine' arrives in English through a chain of borrowings that begins with the Persian ṭanbūr — a long-necked lute with a small pear-shaped body and two to three strings, one of the foundational chordophones of Persian and Central Asian music. The ṭanbūr is an ancient instrument: its basic form appears in Mesopotamian reliefs and is mentioned in early Persian and Babylonian sources. The instrument appears in the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi (1010 CE) and in Persian miniature paintings, where it is held by musicians at court and tavern scenes alike. Sufi musicians used the ṭanbūr in sama (ritual listening), and Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā describe the instrument in their music theory treatises.

The word ṭanbūr — also spelled tambur, tanbur, or danbura in various transliterations — traveled with the instrument through the Arabic-speaking world (where it became al-ṭunbūr), into Turkish (tambur), and into European languages through multiple routes. In medieval Europe, the ṭanbūr's name became confused and merged with other drum-related words: Old French tamburin (small drum), Provençal tambor (drum), and eventually Italian tamburino (little drum). The linguistic conflation of a plucked stringed instrument with a percussion instrument happened because European languages had their own drum-words (from Arabic ṭabl, drum) that sounded similar, and the Persian name was being transmitted imprecisely through oral trade contacts.

The English 'tambourine' — borrowed from French tambourin in the 16th century — had already completed the transformation into a percussion instrument: a shallow circular frame with a skin stretched over one side and metal jingles (zils) inserted in the frame. This instrument appears across many cultures independently, but in European usage it arrived prominently through Moorish Spain and Romani music, and the name that attached to it was the phonetically similar tambourin from the ṭanbūr family of words. The original Persian lute is now played as a living instrument in Iran and Central Asia under its original name, while across the Mediterranean its name jingles in European folk, classical, and pop music on an entirely different instrument.

In modern English, 'tambourine' refers exclusively to the shallow circular frame drum with metal jingles around the frame, played by striking and shaking. It is associated with folk music (particularly flamenco and Romani traditions), Salvation Army performances, pop music, and biblical imagery (Miriam's timbrel in Exodus). The original Persian long-necked lute whose name it carries is known in the West only to specialists in Middle Eastern and Central Asian music. Bob Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine Man' (1965) is the word's most enduring cultural monument in English.
