Torques is Latin, from torquēre (to twist). The object it named was a rigid metal neck ring, usually open at the front, with the ends twisted into decorative terminals. Celtic peoples wore torques from at least the fifth century BCE. The Dying Gaul, a Roman marble copy of a Hellenistic bronze from around 220 BCE, depicts a wounded warrior wearing nothing but a torque. It was the identifying accessory of Celtic identity in Roman eyes.
Roman soldiers coveted them. After defeating Celtic warriors, Roman commanders adopted the torques as a military decoration — the torques was awarded for conspicuous bravery in battle. Titus Manlius Torquatus, a legendary Roman general of the fourth century BCE, supposedly earned his cognomen by killing a Gallic champion in single combat and taking his torque. The Celtic ornament became a Roman medal.
The most famous surviving torque is the Great Torc from the Snettisham Hoard in Norfolk, England, made around 75 BCE. It weighs over a kilogram and was twisted from sixty-four threads of gold alloy. The craftsmanship is extraordinary — whoever made it understood metallurgy, geometry, and the physics of torsion. It was found by a farmer plowing a field in 1948.
The word torque returned to English in the seventeenth century for the physics concept — rotational force, the twisting action around an axis. Same Latin root, same twist. The Celtic neck ring and the physics of rotation share a name because both involve something turned around a center.
