Latin trirēmis combines tres ('three') and rēmus ('oar'). The Greek equivalent was triērēs (τριήρης), from tri- and the verb eressein, 'to row.' Both names describe the defining feature: three tiers of oarsmen stacked along each side of the hull. The trireme emerged in the eastern Mediterranean around the 7th century BCE. Thucydides credits the Corinthians with building the first Greek triremes around 700 BCE, though the Phoenicians may have developed the type earlier.
Athens became the supreme naval power of the Greek world by building the largest trireme fleet in history. In 483 BCE, Themistocles persuaded the Athenian assembly to spend a windfall from the Laurion silver mines on two hundred triremes. The decision was momentous. At the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, the Athenian-led fleet destroyed Xerxes' invasion force in the narrow strait between the island and the mainland.
