тунгус

Tungus (тунгус) is the historical Russian name for the Evenki people, derived from the Yakut word tungus or tongu. The Russians encountered these reindeer herders across eastern Siberia in the 1600s and labeled them tungus in administrative records and colonial documents. The name stuck in Russian and European texts for centuries.

The Evenki—or Evenks, as they call themselves—are the most geographically dispersed indigenous people in Siberia and one of the most dispersed in the world. They range from the Ob River in the west to the Sakha Republic in the east, from the Arctic to Lake Baikal in the south. Twenty-seven time zones separate the western and eastern limits of their traditional territory. A single people stretched across a continent.

By the 20th century, linguists and anthropologists increasingly rejected 'Tungus' as a colonial imposition. The self-designation Evenki became the standard. Russian scholars began using evenki (эвенки) instead of tungus. By the 1950s, the term tungus was marked as outdated in Russian dictionaries. The people reclaimed their own name.

Today, the Evenki number around 40,000 people, though fewer than 3,000 are fluent in the Evenki language. Their reindeer herding traditions and Arctic knowledge sustain them still, even as industrial development and climate change threaten their lands. The shift from tungus to Evenki is linguistic decolonization—a small act of naming that returns agency to a people spread across the world's largest continent.
