The massive red rock in central Australia may be named after a person or possibly means 'shadowy place'—and climbing it has been forbidden since 2019 at the request of the traditional owners.

Uluru (oo-LOO-roo) is the Pitjantjatjara name for a monolith that rises 348 meters above the red desert floor in central Australia. The etymology is contested. Some linguists propose it means 'shadowy place,' referring to the deep caves and shadows in the rock's base. Others argue it's a proper name, possibly derived from a spirit being in the Tjukurpa (Dreaming). The ambiguity reflects the limitations of outsiders understanding Aboriginal language and cultural knowledge.

The monolith is roughly 600 million years old, formed from bedrock uplift and erosion. The Anangu people have lived in the region for at least 30,000 years, possibly much longer. The rock is central to Tjukurpa—the creation narratives that map the land, explain its features, and teach ethical law. Different sections of the rock relate different stories, all held in the country itself.

In 1872, European colonizers 'discovered' the rock and renamed it Ayers Rock after Sir Henry Ayers, a South Australian politician. For a century, tourism promoted it as a climbing destination. The Anangu permitted visitors but asked people not to climb the rock out of respect for its sacred significance. Most tourists ignored this request, treating the climb as a trophy.

In October 2019, climbing Uluru was officially banned. The decision came from the Anangu, the traditional owners, after decades of requests that were ignored. Now Uluru is experienced as the Anangu intended: walked around, observed, respected. The rock has returned to being a place of learning rather than a tourist stunt. The prohibition affirmed something that should have been obvious: the place belongs to the people whose stories it contains.

Uluru is visible from 100 kilometers away. It is the most photographed rock on earth. Millions have walked around it. Hundreds of thousands climbed it before 2019. It has been stared at, measured, marketed, and commodified by people who do not speak Pitjantjatjara and do not live in the country it inhabits.

The rock will outlast all of us. The Anangu have already waited 30,000 years. Respecting Uluru means finally listening to the people who have always known what it means.
