A proper name became the word for a gossip — and then that word was famously applied to the wrong character in the most celebrated Yiddish-themed Broadway musical in history, creating one of popular culture's most durable etymological errors.

The Yiddish yenta (יענטע) began as a woman's proper name — a Yiddish form of the Old French name Gentille (gentle, noble), which was a common given name among Ashkenazi Jewish women in Eastern Europe. Over time, through the particular mechanism by which personal names become common nouns when enough people named that name share a distinguishing characteristic, yenta became a generic term. The specific transformation happened because Yente was a common enough name, and the type of person stereotypically associated with the name — a talkative, gossipy, busybody woman who inserted herself into everyone's business — was recognizable enough that the name became the type.

The yenta in Yiddish cultural usage is specifically a woman who gossips, spreads rumors, meddles in other people's affairs without being asked, and cannot resist the compulsion to share what she knows (or thinks she knows, or has invented) about her neighbors. This is a social type with considerable antiquity in the record of Jewish community life — the kehilla (community) of the Eastern European shtetl was a closed, intensely social world where privacy was scarce and information about everyone's business circulated constantly. The yenta was both a feature of this world and a comic exaggeration of it: the person who took the community's natural information-sharing to its most extreme and least dignified conclusion.

The most famous misapplication of the word occurred in Fiddler on the Roof, the 1964 Broadway musical based on Sholem Aleichem's Tevye stories. In the show, the character called Yente is the village matchmaker — the shadkhn — whose function is to arrange marriages by knowing everything about everyone and using that knowledge to broker unions. This character is explicitly named Yente, which led generations of audiences to believe that 'yenta' meant 'matchmaker.' This is exactly wrong: the matchmaker in Yiddish tradition is the shadkhn (masculine) or shadkhnte (feminine). Yente is a gossip. The show named its gossip-matchmaker after the gossip archetype, and the confusion was guaranteed.

In American English, yenta is used most commonly in the popular sense that Fiddler on the Roof inadvertently created — as a word for a matchmaker or a meddling woman who arranges things — rather than in the original Yiddish sense of a pure gossip. The confusion between gossip and matchmaker is so thoroughly established that correcting it is itself a minor academic industry. The word has also been generalized further into any meddling, opinionated woman who cannot stay out of other people's business — which covers both the original Yiddish gossip and the Fiddler matchmaker, so in practice the word has arrived at a meaning that encompasses both.
