The word that now means 'tyrant' originally meant 'master of the house' — a perfectly neutral term for a man who ran his own household, applied to barbarian kings by Greeks who thought any non-Greek ruler was essentially a homeowner bossing servants.

Despotēs in Greek meant 'master, lord, head of the household.' It was a domestic word. A despotēs ruled his oikos (household) — his wife, children, slaves, and property. The word carried no judgment. Every Greek household had a despotēs. The authority was total within the home and entirely normal.

The political meaning emerged when Greeks applied the domestic term to foreign rulers — especially Persian kings. Herodotus described the Persian king as a despotēs because the king's subjects related to him as a household related to its master: with total obedience and no political rights. The Greeks, who valued citizen participation in governance, saw this as degrading. The word that was neutral at home became an insult abroad.

The Enlightenment formalized 'despotism' as a political category. Montesquieu, in The Spirit of the Laws (1748), classified despotism alongside monarchy and republic as one of three types of government. Despotism was government by fear, without law. The word had traveled from household management to political science, acquiring negative moral weight at each step.

The French Revolution made 'despot' a capital offense. Louis XVI was denounced as a despot. The word became a weapon. To call a ruler a despot was to argue for their removal — and possibly their execution. The household master had become the enemy of the people. The most domestic word in Greek became the most revolutionary word in French.
