“The Greeks had a word for a face so terrible it turned you to stone. They put it on their shields, their temples, and their wine cups — because the thing that kills you might also protect you.”
Gorgō comes from gorgos, meaning 'terrible, fierce, grim.' The word is old — it appears in the Iliad, where Athena's aegis bears a Gorgon head. Hesiod names three Gorgon sisters: Stheno (the Strong), Euryale (the Wide-Wandering), and Medusa (the Guardian). Only Medusa was mortal. Perseus cut off her head around 1300 BCE in the mythic timeline, and the severed head kept its power. Anything it looked at still turned to stone.
The Gorgoneion — the Gorgon's face as a protective emblem — was everywhere in the Greek world. Temples carried it on their pediments. Soldiers painted it on shields. Coins from Athens, Corinth, and dozens of other cities stamped it on silver. The logic was apotropaic: an image so terrifying it would repel evil. You wore the face of the thing you feared to make others fear you. It was branding before branding existed.
The word entered English through Latin in the 14th century. By the 16th century, 'gorgonize' meant to petrify someone with a stare — Shakespeare used the concept, though not the exact word. Gorgon also entered zoology: a genus of soft corals (Gorgonia) was named for the branching forms that recall Medusa's snake-hair. One common misbelief is that Gorgonzola cheese takes its name from the Gorgons. It does not. The cheese comes from Gorgonzola, a town near Milan, whose name derives from a Lombard personal name.
Caravaggio painted his Medusa on a ceremonial shield around 1597 — a real Gorgoneion for a Medici duke. Versace put the Gorgon head on its logo in 1978, making Medusa the face of luxury fashion. Freud wrote a short essay in 1922 arguing the Medusa head was a castration symbol. The Gorgon has been a monster, a talisman, a fashion logo, and a psychoanalytic metaphor. The face keeps working because the fear it names — being seen and frozen — never goes away.
