Hermes was the messenger of the Greek gods, carrying decrees from Olympus to mortals. But he was not a passive courier. He had to translate divine meaning into human language, bridging an ontological gap. The Greek word hermēneuein, 'to interpret,' derives from his name. Hermēneutikḗ was the art of that translation.
Aristotle wrote Peri Hermeneias (On Interpretation) around 350 BCE, examining how language relates to logic and truth. For him, interpretation was about how words represent thoughts and thoughts represent reality. The Church Fathers later adopted hermeneutics for biblical exegesis — the systematic interpretation of scripture. Friedrich Schleiermacher expanded it in the early 1800s into a general theory of understanding any text.
Hans-Georg Gadamer published Truth and Method in 1960 and transformed hermeneutics into a philosophical movement. He argued that all understanding is interpretation, that we never encounter a text without prejudices, and that these prejudices are not obstacles but the very conditions of understanding. Martin Heidegger had already pushed further: existence itself is hermeneutic. We are always already interpreting.
English adopted hermeneutic in the 1600s for biblical interpretation. The word now operates in philosophy, law, literary criticism, and social science. Wherever meaning is contested — a constitutional clause, a poem, a historical event — hermeneutics provides the framework. The god of messengers gave his name to the discipline of figuring out what messages actually mean.
