The nine Muses of Greek mythology each governed a different art: Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Euterpe (flute-playing), Melpomene (tragedy), Terpsichore (dance), Erato (love poetry), Polyhymnia (sacred hymns), Urania (astronomy), and Thalia (comedy). Mousikē tekhnē, the 'art of the Muses,' referred to all nine domains. A mousikos was not a musician in the modern sense but a person educated in the full range of liberal arts.
Plato, writing in the 4th century BCE, used mousikē to mean the education of the mind through harmony, rhythm, and proportion — not just listening to a lyre. In the Republic, he argued that mousikē and gymnastikē (physical training) together formed the complete education. The word was about cultivating the soul, not entertaining an audience.
Latin took musica from Greek with a narrower meaning, focusing more on the auditory art. The medieval European university preserved this narrowed sense: music was one of the four mathematical arts of the quadrivium, alongside arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. But it was still theoretical — the study of harmonic ratios, not the playing of instruments. Performers were not 'musicians' in the academic sense.
The word continued to narrow. By the Renaissance, music meant composed and performed sound. By the 20th century, it meant recorded sound. The nine Muses have been reduced to one domain, and that domain has been reduced to something that comes through headphones. Euterpe got the word. Her eight sisters lost it.
